Camping should not mean bad sleep or skipping the equipment you depend on at night. If you use a CPAP, you can still sleep in a tent, camp from a vehicle, or spend a weekend at a campground. The difference is that power planning becomes part of your basic camp setup.
Start with the machine you actually use, then build enough battery capacity and backup charging around its real power draw. Test the complete setup at home before trusting it miles from an outlet.
Start With Your CPAP, Not the Battery
Check the CPAP label, power supply, and manufacturer instructions for voltage, wattage, and approved DC options. Heated humidifiers and heated hoses can use much more power than the blower alone, so do not size a battery from a guess or from somebody else’s machine.
A basic planning calculation is watts multiplied by hours of use to estimate watt-hours. Add a healthy reserve for conversion losses, cold weather, longer sleep, and battery aging. The best number comes from an overnight test with your own pressure, mask, hose, and comfort settings.
Portable Power Stations Work Well for Car Camping
For many car campers, a portable power station is the simplest solution. It is quiet, rechargeable, and can usually supply AC, DC, and USB power without running an engine beside the tent.
Capacity matters more than the big watt number printed on the box. A CPAP needs enough stored watt-hours to last through the night. Test the battery at home, then leave enough reserve that one cold night or an unexpectedly long sleep does not empty it.

Use an Approved DC Adapter When Available
Many CPAP machines ultimately run on DC power. Using the manufacturer’s approved DC adapter can avoid some of the energy lost when a battery converts DC to household AC and the CPAP power brick converts it back again.
Use only a cord or adapter approved for your exact machine. Voltage, connector polarity, and electronics differ. This is not a good place for a mystery cable or improvised wiring.
Humidifier and Heated Hose Settings Matter
Heated humidity and heated tubing can shorten battery runtime. If your manufacturer says your setup can be used without those features, turning them down or off may extend the night considerably.
Comfort matters too. Test any lower-power setup at home before camp. Pack clean filters and keep the mask, tubing, and machine protected from dust, ash, pollen, rain, and condensation.
Campsite Electricity Is Easy, but Bring Backup
An electric campsite makes CPAP use straightforward, but campground power can still fail. A charged backup battery gives you a second path if a breaker trips or a storm knocks out service.
Use outdoor-rated cords where the campground allows them, keep connections dry, and route cords so nobody trips over them after dark.
Solar Is a Charger, Not the Overnight Battery
Solar panels can refill a battery during the day, but the panel itself does not replace adequate stored energy for the night. Clouds, tree cover, smoke, short winter days, and poor panel placement can all cut output.
That makes solar most useful as one part of a system: sleep from a charged battery, recharge during daylight, and keep another charging option available when practical.

Do Not Drain the Vehicle Starter Battery
A vehicle can recharge a separate CPAP battery or power station while you drive. Running the CPAP all night from the starter battery can leave you with a vehicle that will not start in the morning.
Never idle a vehicle beside a tent or enclosed sleeping area. Exhaust and carbon monoxide can move into places that seem safely separated from the tailpipe.
Generators Require Extra Care
A generator can recharge batteries at an RV or base camp when rules allow it, but it brings noise, fuel, exhaust, and carbon-monoxide risk. It should never run inside a tent, camper, vehicle, vestibule, or other enclosed sleeping space.
When generators are allowed, charging a battery during permitted daytime hours and sleeping on silent battery power is usually friendlier to nearby campers.
Backpacking With a CPAP
Backpacking makes every watt-hour heavier. Travel CPAP machines and compatible compact batteries can make backcountry use more practical, but the exact machine and battery still need to be tested together before the trip.

Flying With CPAP Batteries
If you fly to your camping destination, battery size changes what can travel. The FAA’s current airline battery guidance says rechargeable lithium batteries from 0 to 100 Wh are generally allowed on passenger aircraft, 101 to 160 Wh batteries require airline approval, and batteries above 160 Wh are prohibited. Spare lithium batteries and power banks must be carried in the cabin rather than checked baggage.
Large lithium power stations commonly exceed the airline limit, so check the battery label and your carrier’s rules before leaving home. Protect spare battery terminals from short circuits and keep required approvals with your travel plan.
Keep the Machine Clean and Dry
Set the CPAP above bare ground on a stable, dry surface. Keep it away from rain, dew, smoke, campfire ash, loose dirt, and places where a dog or camper can step on the hose.
Carry the cleaning supplies recommended for your equipment and pack out waste. Medical gear still belongs inside a low-impact camping routine.

- Tested battery or power station
- Approved DC adapter if used
- Wall and vehicle charging options
- Solar panel when it fits the trip
- Extra filters and cleaning supplies
- Dry storage for the machine
- Backup power capacity
- Small light for nighttime setup

Test Before Dirt
Before the trip, sleep one full night at home using the exact battery and CPAP configuration you plan to take. Check remaining capacity in the morning, then recharge the battery using the same method you expect to use in camp.
That simple test exposes undersized batteries, incompatible cords, slow solar charging, and comfort problems while an outlet is still within reach.
Sleep Well and Camp With a Margin
A CPAP does not have to keep you out of camp. Match the power source to your exact machine, test it under real overnight conditions, carry a reserve, and protect the equipment from weather and camp grime.
Good camping has always depended on planning for the night before darkness arrives. CPAP power is simply one more piece of that plan.
