Florida does not have one opening day for hunting. Dates change by species, hunting zone, method, and land type. Deer season can begin in August in South Florida and much later in North Florida.

The 2026–27 calendar is now available. The easiest plan is to find your zone, choose your species, and then check whether you are hunting private land or a Wildlife Management Area.

Florida Deer Season Starts August 1 in Zone A

Zone A has Florida’s first private-land deer opener. Archery season runs August 1–30, 2026. Crossbow season runs August 1–September 4. Muzzleloading gun season runs September 5–18.

Zone A general gun season runs September 19–October 18, then returns November 21–January 3. The youth deer hunt weekend is September 12–13.

Zone C Deer Dates

Zone C archery runs September 19–October 18. Crossbow season runs September 19–October 23. Muzzleloading gun season is October 24–November 6.

General gun season runs November 7–January 24. The Zone C youth deer hunt is October 31–November 1.

Zone B Deer Dates

Zone B archery runs October 17–November 15. Crossbow season runs October 17–November 20. Muzzleloading gun season runs November 21–December 4.

General gun season runs December 5–February 21. The youth deer hunt weekend is November 28–29.

Zone D Deer Dates

Zone D is the latest of the four zones. Archery runs October 24–November 25. Crossbow runs October 24–November 25 and again November 30–December 4.

General gun season runs November 26–29 and December 12–February 21. Muzzleloading gun season runs December 5–11 and February 22–28. The youth deer weekend is December 5–6.

Check the Official Florida Calendar Before You Hunt

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission season calendar lists current dates, bag limits, methods, deer management units, and other rules. Check it again before every trip because local restrictions can matter.

If you hunt outside Florida too, our Texas hunting season guide uses the same simple approach: start with the species, location, and current rules.

WMA Dates Can Be Different

The statewide dates above do not apply to every Wildlife Management Area. Each WMA can have its own hunt dates, permit rules, methods, access rules, and bag limits.

Read the current brochure for the exact WMA you plan to hunt. Some hunts require quota or limited-entry permits. Do not assume the private-land opener applies across the road on public land.

Dove Season Opens September 26

Florida’s 2026–27 mourning and white-winged dove season has three parts. They run September 26–October 18, November 14–December 6, and December 19–January 31.

Scout fields before opening day. Look for food, bare ground, water, tree lines, and regular flight paths. Then check migratory bird rules before hunting.

Duck Season Starts With an Early September Hunt

The early teal and wood duck season runs September 19–23, 2026. The regular duck season then runs November 21–29 and December 12–January 31.

Waterfowl rules include species limits and other requirements. If duck season is your focus, our duck-hunting choke guide explains how range and patterning affect a practical setup.

Florida Has a 2026 Bear Hunt

Florida’s 2026 statewide bear hunt is scheduled for December 5–27. It is a permit hunt, and only designated bear harvest zones are open.

The application period is September 11–21, 2026. Hunters interested in this season should use current FWC bear information rather than an older hunting calendar.

Get Licenses and Permits Early

Most hunters need a Florida hunting license plus any permits required for the species or land. Deer, turkey, management areas, migratory birds, waterfowl, and limited-entry hunts can add requirements.

Quota and limited-entry applications can open months before the hunt. Mark application dates early instead of waiting for opening week.

Florida Heat Changes the Hunt

Early seasons can be hot and humid. Carry more water than you think you need. Wear light clothing, use sun protection, and take heat illness seriously.

A good insulated bottle can help keep water cold. You can compare YETI Rambler bottles on Amazon before an early-season trip.

Keep Meat Cold Fast

Warm weather means you need a meat-care plan before the hunt. Have ice and a clean cooler ready. Recover game quickly and cool edible meat as soon as practical.

If you need a cooler for the truck, you can compare Igloo BMX coolers on Amazon. Our cooler-packing guide also explains how ice placement and organization help food stay cold.

Plan for Bugs, Rain, and Wet Ground

Mosquitoes and ticks can be heavy in warm weather. Rain can also turn access roads and trails into wet ground fast. Pack for the real forecast, not the weather you hope to get.

For more warm-weather outdoor planning, this guide to ways to deal with mosquitoes covers simple steps that can make time outside more comfortable.

A Simple Florida Hunting Plan

  1. Choose the species you want to hunt.
  2. Find your hunting zone or exact WMA.
  3. Check the current season dates and legal methods.
  4. Buy the required licenses and permits.
  5. Check quota or limited-entry requirements.
  6. Scout access and have a backup location.
  7. Plan for heat, rain, bugs, water, and meat care.

The Bottom Line

Florida hunting starts early. Zone A deer archery opens August 1, 2026. Other deer zones open later, and migratory bird seasons follow their own calendar.

Always match the date to the species, zone, method, and land. Check the current FWC rules before leaving home, especially on WMAs. A few minutes of planning can prevent a costly mistake and make opening day much easier.
