Private Anglers Had State Seasons
Private anglers in the Gulf did not follow one federal season calendar. Each Gulf state set its own private season for state and federal waters under the state management system.
That meant a legal fishing day in one state might not be open in another. It also meant anglers had to check state rules before each trip. Some states used special permits, surveys, or reporting systems.

The basic federal recreational limit in the Gulf was two red snapper per person per day. Fish had to be at least 16 inches total length. Captains and crew could not keep a recreational bag limit while working on a federal for-hire trip.

South Atlantic Season Was Much Shorter
The South Atlantic recreational red snapper season was only two days in 2025. It opened July 11 and July 12. The limit was one red snapper per person per day, with no minimum size during that federal opening.

Release Gear Was Important
Red snapper often live in deep water. A fish pulled up fast can suffer from barotrauma. Its eyes may bulge, its stomach may push outward, or it may float at the surface after release.
