Mysteries of the Louisiana Swamp Lands

Situated in and around Louisiana is a string of swamplands, which are home to some of the most versatile groupings of wildlife in the country. This Southern locale is also just as well-known for its musical heritage, amazing food and mysterious bayous, all of which make it one of the ideal destinations for travelers looking for some excitement amongst a beautiful, natural setting.

Included in the wildlife found within the Louisiana swamp land are the American Alligator, the American Black Bear, a host of various snake species, fish, birds and more. In fact, Martin Lake, which is part of the wildlife preserve found in portions of the Louisiana swamp land, is home to ibis, egrets, herons, water moccasins, cottonmouths, coypu rats and more.

Swampland Wild Life

Wildlife aficionados often travel to this state to get an up-close glimpse of many of these animals in their natural habitats, while taking in the scenic beauty of the swamp land and all of its various inlets and unique characteristics. In addition to the wildlife, there are numerous varieties of shrubs, bushes, trees and flowers, interspersed within the moss-covered waters of the swamp.

There are other states that also have swamp lands, but none captures the sheer beauty and essence of these natural habitats quite like the Louisiana swamp lands.

Legends of the Louisiana Swamps

In addition, many people find themselves drawn to the state from the lore and mystery surrounding the bayou areas. Some of this comes from the mystery of the state as a whole, generated by the French-Creole inhabitants who incorporated their unusual ceremonies and beliefs into many areas of the state. This is the place where funerals are cause for a parade, complete with a jazz band, and a celebration. The place where religions have become intermingled and the landscapes have appeared so haunting and mysterious for so long, that more mystery writers have called Louisiana home than just about anywhere else in the country.

Many Cajun spiritual beliefs and tales are tied to the history of the bayous, which in turn generate an aura of mystery centered on them, particularly in the Southern portion of the state, around New Orleans. It is this aura and the many tales that draw some to explore the heritage of the bayous and of the state in general, to find out more about what makes Louisiana and its natural settings so unique and fascinating.
